Think back to your previous attempts at weight loss. Which endeavors were most successful or lasted the longest? Now think about which attempts required the most accountability on your part. Is there a correlation?
Weight Loss Tip #25 - Recruit Accountability

First things first, what is accountability? Accountability is "an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility for one's actions" The important thing to notice is this is not a punishment or a trap, but is brought about by your own will. How accountability helps Have you ever tried goal setting, creating a vision board or a "5-year plan"? These are all methods used to help you see the big picture and stay focusde on your main objective. Accountability in weight loss and health is exactly the same. Whether you are accountable to a spouse, friend, coach, an app or a medical professional, having some type of accountability increases your likelihood of continuing in a healthy habit. The key is to set permanent objectives such as living longer or even feeling more comfortable in your clothes - NOT simply getting to a certain number on the scale. Why it's important Setting goals and sharing them with an accountability partner can increase your motivation and keep you moving forward when you have a hard day and feel like throwing in the towel. Some studies show that you are three times more likely to stick with a behavior or habit change if you have accountability. Forms of accountability Accountability comes in many forms. - recording your food (on paper, in an app, taking photos) that someone else has access to - recruiting a partner that is on the same journey as you - attending a support group - updating your spouse once a week - commit to weekly exercise classes - establish deadlines (i.e. sign up for a 5K or a fun run) with a friend - regular visits with a dietitian or doctor An accountability partner is such a valuable resource! Aside from taking the steps toward a healthier lifestyle with diet and exercise, accountability is the next greatest tool. Your support can help increase your motivation, call you out when you need it, provide you with information, lift you up when it gets difficult, and celebrate your victories with you.

My challenge for you this week is to recruit a friend/family member/coworker or professional that will support your journey and your goals. It's important that you communicate your approach to reaching your goals (i.e. no fad dieting, extreme food restriction, etc) so that they understand how to support you. Be patient with yourself and don't expect perfection. Continue to work towards your goals understanding that each day will be challenging in its own way. Accountability helps you to deal with these challenges. If you're looking for an accountability partner, contact me and I'd love to be that support for you! I'm here for you and I believe in you.
