Understanding Electrolytes: What They Are and Why They Matter for Your Health.

There are always hot topics in the field of health and nutrition. They come and go year after year - from the keto diet and probiotics to intermittent fasting and plant-based eating, there's always something new that promises the get you the results you're looking for.

The field of dietetics is constantly evolving, and it's exciting to witness the emerging research that contributes to our understanding of how our bodies function and what's good or bad for them. *However, some diet trends are simply common practices repackaged with new, catchy names to increase sales. It's crucial not to fall for such marketing tactics when it comes to your health journey. I'm always here to help steer you in the right direction!*

With that being said, I'm seeing a lot of buzz around the topic of electrolytes.

What are they? Do you need them?

Similar to vitamins, minerals play a crucial role in our body's growth and development, as well as performing a myriad of other functions. Our bodies require two main types of minerals, macro and trace, to function optimally. These minerals help in enzyme and hormone production, heart function, aid in digestion, maintain bone, brain, muscle and nervous system function.

Electrolytes, a type of mineral, are especially important as they help prevent dehydration, balance blood pressure and pH and help rebuild damaged tissues. They are essential in preventing that sluggish feeling that comes with dehydration.

Side note: Proper hydration is key. Do you ever get the afternoon "slump" feeling? Do you usually reach for an energy drink, coffee or soda to power you through? My challenge to you is to increase your fluids (with or without added electrolytes). Start first thing in the morning with 10-15 ounces of water before coffee, breakfast or anything else. Continue to hydrate throughout the day with a goal of 30-40 ounces by lunch time. See if you notice a difference in your energy level come 3-4PM.

Back on topic...

Since our bodies don't produce minerals or electrolytes, we have to obtain them from our diet. Minerals can be found in the soil, whole foods, spring water, and minimally processed salt. Unfortunately, commercial farming has depleted the soil of natural minerals and bottled, purified water is typically stripped of natural minerals. As a result, it's more important than ever to ensure we are getting enough minerals and electrolytes in other parts of our diet.

Foods that contain electrolytes include:

  • Bananas

  • Yogurt

  • Avocados

  • Spinach/kale

  • Oats

  • Coconut water and many more

So, do you need electrolytes? Absolutely! Do you have to take them in a powdered form and mix them in your water? Not necessarily!

If you do choose to take an electrolyte powder or supplements, look for a product with natural, clean ingredients. Look out for preservatives and artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners.

Just like any other vitamin or mineral, there is such thing as too much of a good thing. I recommend saving these supplements for:

  • first thing in the morning (especially if you feel you may be already behind on hydration)

  • when traveling

  • when you are sick

  • higher altitudes

  • sweating/exercising or when out in the sun

In summary, electrolytes (along with all minerals) are extremely important to your body functioning properly, having a consistent energy level and maintaining healthy bones, muscles and tissue. Ideally, most of these nutrients would come through eating more of a whole, nutrient-dense food diet. Supplements have their place and can be useful in certain situations. Balancing your electrolytes can be a game changer for your overall health and energy level. P.S. Don't forget my challenge to you to increase your fluids as soon as you wake up and throughout the morning to increase your energy level.
